We are so impressed with these Ergo pencils that we’ve created some neat exercises to go with them….
“Pencil Exercises for Beginners”
|
|
This in-house publication was created specifically to compliment these great ergo pencils.
The target audience is children from 3 to 5 years old and there are 20 jam-packed pages with more than 20 exercises to help very young children with pencil control, pencil accuracy and the development of the fine motor skills needed for handwriting. There are some special instructions for parents of left-handed children but apart from this special page, these exercises are suitable for all children within this age group. It’s available as a pdf file download (3.77MB) or as a hard copy. More information here…. |

“Tie Me Shoelaces” Activity Card
It gives us great pleasure to introduce a brand new, locally produced resource to help you teach a young left-handed child how to tie their own shoelaces!
This is a task that right-handed parents have really battled with in the past. No more struggles from now onwards! |
|
|
Our new “Tie Me Shoelaces” Activity Card makes teaching this skill not only easy, but also FUN! In no time at all your little lefty will totally “get the hang” of how to tie his/her own shoelaces and they’ll be making bows in everything possible all around the house!
Our resource purposefully has different coloured laces so that the child can easily see which lace is which. This feature also overcomes the difficulties that hamper the teaching of this skill because at this young age there is still so much confusion about which is the left and which is the right! Easy to follow step by step photographs are in the lefty instructions and these describe and show the left and right laces in terms of what colour they are. This neatly sidesteps all left/right confusion (which is perfectly normal at this age!) so that the child is able to learn and practice tying their own shoelaces without any unnecessary impediments to learning this skill.
This resource also assists in the development of the fine motor skills and accurate hand/eye co-ordination needed before learning how to write.

Pictured alongside is the LEFT-handed version in blue. Notice how the barrel has special indentations for the fingers. These are designed to provide maximum grip and comfort when used by left-handers. As you can see from the picture, the pencil comes with a matching left-handed sharpener. It is also available in a magenta/pink LEFT-handed version. Since this is such an amazing new ‘invention’ we’ve decided to offer the RIGHT-handed versions of it as well. The colours available are the same: that is either pink or blue. The indentations on the barrel of the pencil are shaped for righties and as you would expect, these have a right-handed sharpener. (To find out what codes to use when ordering please go to this page.)
I have tried this pencil out for myself and I must say that I found it very comfortable to use - it really DOES live up to the sales blurb which goes like this: |

What’s New? |
|
The ‘smove easy ergo pencils have been specifically designed for children’s hands. They achieve the correct grip right from the start, no matter how the pencil is rotated. Its non-slip grip zone provides an intuitive, simple and secure hold. Choose from the left or right hand version. The ‘smove easy ergo contains an extra thick lead which is particularly suitable for learning to write, especially as it is less prone to breakages.
Developed after extensive practical tests with children from 3 – 8 years old the unusual shape of the pencil, the different versions for both right and left handed users, the rubber grip zones, the small size and low weight, all encourage a natural writing position for children’s hands and make learning to write effortless and child friendly.” |

School Presentations……... Last year LeftHand NZ made an experimental presentation to the teachers of Ruawai Primary School. This covered what it means to be left-handed and the difficulties left handers face in a right-handed world! The teachers tried out lefty scissors, rulers and pencil sharpeners and other lefty equipment - thus they experienced for themselves the difficulties of being given the wrong equipment! Our very practical ‘hands on’ demonstrations helped those who attended the session to better understand the difficulties and they are now far more aware of how they can make a very real and lasting difference to the left-handed children in their classes. Feedback from the teachers was excellent! (See the box alongside for just a sprinkling of the comments received.)
Invitation…... We are now planning a series of trips to get around and visit more schools! We’d like to see more of this beautiful country and in the process we’ll take our presentation to kindergartens and primary schools. If there is enough interest we will set up some sessions for parents as well! If you are a teacher reading this and you would like us to make our presentation to your school, (or if you are a parent with a young left-handed child and you would like your child’s school and teachers to benefit from our presentation then………...please……email us and tell us so that we can plan to visit your town later this year or early next year. We are now much more mobile than we were previously! We are adapting to “life on the road” and are just making sure that all systems work before we set off around the country! |
