This is a very valuable aid for promoting the correct holding of a pencil because it encourages the tripod grip.  It also reduces stress on the fingers and writer’s cramp.  Designed by doctors, it works with the body’s natural physiology to gently place the fingers in the proper position for gripping.  It will help any young child develop a good grip of the writing instrument.  This model of the ergo pencil grip also has 'wings' which prevent the fingers from crossing over. 
There is both an ‘L’ marking and an ‘R’ marking on the pencil grip.  Left-handers put their thumb on the ‘L’ and the forefinger and middle fingers fit comfortably into the remaining indentations to form the tripod grip all set for writing!  Similarly right-handers put their thumb on the ’R’ and they are all set for writing.  I have used the ergonomic pencil grips with very young lefties and righties to good effect in my teaching.  It helps young children stop pressing too hard and it really does work!
